Dear Parents of Fourth Graders:

The Fourth Grade Teachers at Old Bridge would like to extend an early welcome to you and your child. We can’t wait to meet your rising fourth grader and begin an exciting year of growth and learning! Fourth grade is an important year as your child begins working towards independent learning! In order to help your child keep all of the skills they learned in third grade fresh in their minds, and to prepare him or her for fourth grade, we recommend that you help your student with the following activities during the summer.

1. READ, READ, READ!!! Please have your child read at least 30 minutes each day! Current research shows that the more independent reading your child does a day, the more successful he or she will be academically. Students can also access EPIC during the summer with a parent account. Go to https://www.getepic.com/ to create an account for your child to have access to hundreds of books this summer.

2. Next year your child will embark on a journey through Virginia history! As you travel during the summer months, please help your child locate all the places that your family visits on a Virginia map. You can print one off the internet and mark the places with a star. Here is an online interactive Virginia map: https://mrnussbaum.com/virginia-interactive-map

3. Encourage your student to practice the multiplication facts through 12 for memorization and speed. Students need to be able to answer 30 multiplication facts in one minute. Some resources you can use are flash cards or the following web sites: · http://coolmath4kids.com/ · http://aplusmath.com/games/index.html

We feel these suggestions will help your child have a successful beginning to his or her Fourth Grade year! Have a wonderful summer and thanks for your help!
